Owning My Life & Empowering Women in the Workplace

Hi, I’m Emma, and I want to share something really important with you! I’ve recently stepped into the role of Business Development Consultant for England & Wales at Own My Life, alongside my work as CEO of Choose to Grow. If you know me, you’ll know that I’m on a mission to make workplaces not just better, but truly great for women to thrive, grow, and lead.

I’ve spent years working with HR teams, coaching leaders, and building strategies that create resilient, inclusive and empowering workplaces. My work has been recognised by Wales HR Awards, Best Businesswoman Awards and I was listed on The Telegraph’s 100 Female Entrepreneurs to Watch for delivering real impact - but despite all that, I’ve seen firsthand how the workplace can also be a battleground for women, especially those facing abuse.

A Bit About Me

I was born in Swansea, grew up in Tenby, and now live in Ross-on-Wye, so I have strong connections on both sides of the border. I’m also a devoted mum to three children, two horses, and a dog, and when I’m not working, I spend all my time with them.

As CEO of Choose to Grow, I specialise in neuroscience-driven leadership coaching, unlocking leadership potential one brain at a time. Over the last 10 years, I’ve worked with thousands of leaders, helping them become resilient, visionary, and prepared for the challenges ahead. My work has led to real change in organisations, helping them grow their people and, in turn, their business.

The Harsh Reality for Women at Work & Why Own My Life is the Answer

Let’s be real - work should be a place of growth and empowerment, but for many women, it’s another space where power, control and manipulation thrive. Abuse isn’t only perpetrated behind closed doors at home; abuse seeps into boardrooms, meetings, and payslips. The higher we climb, the more vulnerable we can become to economic and financial control.

💜 I know this because it happened to me.

I was told I wasn’t intelligent enough, yet I was expected to do all the work on major projects until I was burnt out. In meetings, I was kept confused, surrounded by men who acted nice in public but made me feel worthless behind closed doors. I was threatened - my job, my relationships, my home and my entire sense of stability felt like it was hanging by a thread.

I was humiliated about my literacy and numeracy skills in public meetings, leaving me feeling small and ashamed. I was isolated, brainwashed, and controlled, forced to bring in huge revenue while having no say in my own earnings. I felt trapped. I didn’t trust anyone. And worst of all, I thought it was my fault.

💜 Then I found Own My Life, and everything changed.

Own My Life showed me that I wasn’t the problem. The systems, the power imbalances, the cycle of abuse - that was the problem. And now, I’m here to make sure other women don’t have to learn the hard way.

Bringing Own My Life into Workplaces

I’m making it my mission to bring Own My Life into as many workplaces as possible. Why? Because women deserve better, and businesses thrive when their people are truly supported. Here’s how we can make that happen together:

  1. Discovery Portal Access – A low cost but far reaching model gives full online access to Own My Life materials with a CPD-accredited learning pathway for every woman in your organisation

  2. Practitioner Model – A low cost but cascading model with a more personal touch would be to train someone in your organisation to deliver Own My Life to women at work; in groups or 1:1

  3. Own My Life Workplace & Leadership Programmes – A more bespoke and targeted delivery model where I would come in and deliver a series of 3 interventions on the following:

    • Workplace Programme: Supporting entry-level women, aspiring female leaders, and women in male-dominated industries.

    • Leadership Programme: Equipping leaders with the tools to support team members facing abuse, fostering a sisterhood where women can truly thrive.

International Women’s Day – Let’s Celebrate Badass Women at Work!

We know that owning your life at work isn’t always easy - but when you take back your power, it’s game-changing. So, let’s lift up and celebrate the women who have stood their ground, shattered ceilings, and reclaimed their worth.

Do you have a story about owning your life at work? Or know an incredible woman who does? We want to amplify these voices and inspire more women to step into their power.

💜 Share your story with us, and we’ll feature it on our website and social media - because your journey will inspire someone else to take that next bold step like I did.

Drop me an email at emma@choosetogrow.co.uk with a little about you and your journey - I can’t wait to hear from you!

And if you’re working on a Women at Work strategy, I’m offering free consultation time to help shape it. Or if you just fancy a cuppa and a chat about how Own My Life can support women in your workplace, let’s connect!

Why This Work Matters So Much to Me

I believe that what I went through needs to be used as a force for good. Too many women are controlled - at home, at work, and in society. I want to help them break free, take ownership, and thrive.

I also noticed a huge gap in services for women like me - women who had been subjected to abuse but didn’t have the support they needed in their local area because they did not fit a need category. The workplace can and should play a role in plugging that gap.

We spend so much of our lives at work, so workplaces should be places of support, not suffering. I want to see women break through patriarchal systems, armed with the education and insight I never had when I started out.

Through Own My Life, I can help ensure that this vital training reaches the women who need it most, empowering them to rewrite their stories and take back control. And when more women own their whole lives, the world becomes a much more joyful and empowered place.

As I step into this new journey with Own My Life, I’m feeling equal parts excited and scared - but I’m here for it! With all of your support, I know we can make a real impact together. Let’s do this! 💜
