Discovering Transformation: Our Visit to Trevi in Plymouth

This week, Team Own My Life, had the incredible opportunity to visit Trevi, a remarkable women’s service based in Plymouth. For over a year now, Trevi has been running the Own My Life course, an initiative that has proven to be truly transformational for the women they serve. Our visit was a chance to learn, connect, and celebrate the positive changes happening within the community.

Joining our CEO, Natalie Collins, on this wonderful trip was our Relationship Development Lead, Victoria Mason. On the Sunday night we had a wonderful meal with soon-to-be-trained facilitator Angie and Own My Life facilitators Faye and Rachael.  The next morning, as we arrived at Trevi’s Sunflower House, we were greeted by a warm atmosphere filled with the energy and resilience of the women who are part of the community. Trevi’s commitment to empowering women is evident in every corner of the house, and their passion for making a difference radiates through their work.

Throughout the day, we had the privilege of engaging with both the practitioners and women who have participated in Own My Life courses. It was heartwarming to hear the stories of transformation—women who have faced significant challenges and have emerged stronger, more confident, and ready to embrace their futures. Trevi staff shared how the course has not only equipped them with valuable tools to support women but has also fostered a sense of community and belonging among participants.

The positive impact of the Own My Life course was palpable, one woman told Natalie that Trevi's support and Own My Life had genuinely saved her life when she had been suicidal, another woman said the course had given her the courage to share her experiences with loved ones. Women spoke about how Own My Life had helped them regain ownership of their lives, offering them new perspectives and tools to navigate their journeys. From building self-esteem to making sense of their lives, the transformations we witnessed were nothing short of inspiring.

As we spent the day at Trevi, it became clear that this organisation is more than just a service; it is a sanctuary where women can find solace, support, and strength. The smell of freshly cooked scones wafted from the kitchen, with brilliant peer supporter, Tina, facilitating a baking session (Natalie and Victoria can confirm they tasted delicious too!). The relationships built between the women, including staff and volunteers, are foundational to the success of their work. It is evident that Trevi is deeply committed to nurturing these connections, fostering an environment where women can thrive.

Our visit was especially significant as Trevi approaches a transitional period, with CEO Hannah Shead stepping down after 13 years of dedicated leadership. Hannah’s vision and commitment have shaped the organisation into what it is today, and we are excited to see how Trevi continues to evolve under new leadership.

Our time at Trevi reinforced the importance of collaboration and building sisterhood among organisations working to make women’s lives better. By building relationships and sharing insights, we can amplify our impact and create a stronger network of support for women in need.

Before leaving Trevi, Victoria and Natalie were delighted to each receive a sunflower turtle made by the very talented Faye. During that afternoon’s sewing session, the women and Faye had been working away to make a beautiful Natalie Doll for her to take away.  These gifts will remind us always of the beautiful ways Trevi is making a difference to women’s lives, and how Own My Life has become a magnificent part of that.

Our visit to Trevi was a powerful reminder of the resilience of women and the vital role women’s organisations like Trevi play in their journeys. We left feeling inspired and motivated to continue our mission at Own My Life, knowing that together, we can enable more women to take ownership of their lives and find their voices.

Thank you, Trevi, for the magnificent experience and for the important work you do every day!
